چکیده

S, 'treptozotocin, an antibiotic produced from Streptomyces achromogenes, is now being used frequently for the production of experimental cataract." The exact mechanism of this cataract formation has not yet been determined. Streptozotocin has two distinct properties, either of which it was considered could be responsible for the cataract formation. First, Streptozotocin possesses the property of selective destruction of the beta cells of the pancreas in monkeys, dogs, and rodents, producing diabetes mellitus. Second, Streptozotocin possesses antimitotic properties when used in rats and mice with lymphoid leukemia. To investigate which of these properties might be responsible for the cataract formation, nicotinamide was used in the experiment described below. Nicotinamide has been found to protect rats against the pancreolytic effect of Streptozotocin but to have no action on its antitumor properties.

Inhibitory Effect of r-Hirudin Variant III on Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Cataracts in Rats

The in vivo inhibitory effect of r-hirudin variant III (rHV3) on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic cataracts in rats was investigated. SD-rats were firstly made diabetic by a single intraperitoneal injection of 2% (W/V) STZ (65 mg/kg). Two weeks later, cataract formation was examined by slit lamp microscope, and the cataracted animals were randomly grouped. The animals in the treated groups...

GP-1447, an inhibitor of aldose reductase, prevents the progression of diabetic cataract in rats.

We examined the effects of GP-1447 (3-[(4,5,7-trifluorobenzothiazol-2-yl)methyl]-5-methylphenyl acetic acid) on existing cataracts and sorbitol content in the lens in rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes. GP-1447 is an inhibitor of aldose reductase, which is the first enzyme in the polyol pathway. Cataracts in the central region of the lens were observed in 7 of 14 eyes (50%) by the fifth ...

[Immunohistochemical study of apoptosis of lens epithelial cells in human and diabetic rat cataracts].

PURPOSE To evaluate apoptosis of lens epithelial cells with immunohistochemical methods. METHODS We performed terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling (TUNEL) assays on capsulotomy specimens (68 eyes in 53 patients) from patients who had undergone cataract surgery and an epithelium of diabetic cataracts in rats (144 eyes in 72 rats). The animal model of dia...

Beneficial Effects of Coenzyme Q10 in Streptozotocin-Induced Type I Diabetic Rats

The present investigation was undertaken to study the benefical effects of Coenzyme Q10 in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced type I diabetic rats. STZ-diabetes produced a significant increase in fasting glucose levels that was associated with decrease in serum insulin levels. STZ also produced hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceredemia, increase in lipid peroxidation and decrease in high density lip...
